How to know if your dog is in pain.

Our dogs are often very stoic, and we may miss those early signs that they may be experiencing pain. They can’t complain and tell us they are in pain but there are signs that we can look out for and should be aware of.

What are some common signs of pain?

  1. Limping

  2. Difficulty moving

  3. Slower to move than usual

  4. A change in behaviour (some examples may include reluctance to jump into the car, they may be less excited to go for a walk or less excited to greet you at the front door when you get home from work)

  5. Avoiding certain activities

  6. Low mood

  7. Poor appetite

  8. Sleeping more or sleeping less

More importantly, it is important to be aware of your dog’s regular daily habits so you can identify when changes occur that could indicate they are experiencing pain.

If you are concerned that your dog is in pain, we always recommend consulting with your veterinarian first. Once you’ve consulted with your veterinarian, we can help teach you how to manage your dog’s pain. We can use exercise therapy, manual therapy techniques like those in human physiotherapy and therapeutic modalities such as laser therapy to help manage your dog’s pain.
